Basic Signs of Acute Pathology

The three "F"

Fat stranding

  • Increased attenuation of fat

  • In acute setting, most commonly due to edema from inflammation

  • Can also be due to fibrosis or engorged lymphatics in setting of malignancy

Free Air

  • Sign of hollow viscous perforation

Free Fluid

  • Reactive from inflammation (e.g. pancreatitis, appendicitis)

  • Fluid from perforated hollow viscus or blood from solid organ injury
